What is snippet and rich snippet
This is what you really aware of before dive into today’s session new snippet settings. Rich Snippets are the term used to describe structured data markup that site operators can add to their existing HTML code, which is like spoon-feeding the search engines to better understand what information is contained in detail on each web pages, moreover, It attracts customers because of its detailed and well structured.
Example of the normal snippet
Example of rich snippet
Google rolled out the brand-new snippet settings such as max-snippet, max-video-preview, max-image-preview.
Now google allow webmasters to take care of or controlling how our snippets should look like. We can make the snippet visible through either robots meta tags or an HTTML attribute.
What are the new meta tags to set new snippets
You can insert the below meta tags to either an HTML page or the specified language pages.
Know about max – snippet:[in numbers]
This is the new meta tag attribute which determines the maximum text length in the description part of page snippet.
Example : <meta name=”robots” content=”max-snippet:50”>
Know about max – video-preview:[in numbers]
This is the new meta tag attribute which determines the length of the video in other words it determines the maximum duration in seconds for the video preview.
Example: <meta name=”robots” content=”max-video-preview:60sec
Know about max – image-preview:[settings]
This is also for the specification through which we can determine the size of the preview image, using “none” “standard”, or “large”
Example: <meta name=”robots” content=”max-image-preview:standard
We can combine those tags
We can combine the tags like as we need. combine them if you want to both control the max length of the text and video. Here is an example:
<meta name=”robots” content=”max-snippet:50, max-image-preview:large”>
Note: If you are an expert in HTML you can directly write a code like below to specify the snippet.
<p><span data-nosnippet>leo y joe</span> this is very helpful I hope so.</p>
Here I think you might come up with the question like what is no snippet indicates for.
This is an old option that has not changed yet, it determines that you don’t want any textual snippet shown for this page.
The uniqueness of Google is again proved here by introducing such customization over the snippet results.
How we can preview the new snippet settings
There is no way to preview these new snippet settings until in future google may release. It will work usually in Google search. So you just need to implement it and wait for Google to show them. You can use the URL inspection tool to check the crawling and once Google crawls it, you should be able to see the revised snippet in the live search results.
Live from end of October
Google officially announced that this changes effects from mid or late of October 2019. This is the major roll out a month from today.
Does it affect ranking
It will not affect the ranking in any manner because it is not a core google algorithm update.
You can Increase the Click Through Rate (CTR) by enriching your snippet with the quality information, that may cause you to improve the ranking in future.
